Fire Laces – Coolest Survival Gear of the Year – Firestarter Videos

These Fire laces from the folks at Survival Frog are the coolest boot laces I have ever seen. They are made of 550 paracord with little ferro rods on each end and a striker/blade that threads in the laces.

Hey Brian I have them they came in a box of goodies from a friend for my trip this year. took me a min to realise what they were and hothouse the striker on the sides there one sharp.edge and other is rounded. easiest way is survival frog log is facing you with blade up. the blAde good enough to cut wood for slivers and scrape bark and tinder. I'm pleAsed by them.

Shoelaces can be used more than once (unlike a paracord bracelet) and be invisible and be on you everyday.

They should use the 550 fire cord for the lace

Brian, I have had my laces for 4 months and found the striker cuts the boots and lace over time. So I placed the striker under the insole of my boots.

Ok, you ought to have some clout with this company, so I want you to talk to the company and get me some free ones. 🙂

    1) Why. In the name of God. Didn't they use firecord??

    2) That knife edge is going to chew up my boots. Screw that! Put a protector around it like the ones that they use on dog tags.

    3) Assuming that's high carbon steel (it better be), isn't it going to rust out in nothing flat being attached to my boots and getting wet? Put a mustard or vinegar patina on it.

Very cool idea. They should have a striker in one lace and in the other lace put a magnesium block that's about the same size and shape as the striker so they look the same while wearing them. Now you actually have some form of tinder to go along with your ferro rod and striker. Keep up the great work.

Don't feel bad for getting excited over the shoe laces, I got just as excited from seeing the title of the video. I am all about having fire starting material on my person and the fact you can have in your shoes is amazing! The paracord is a nice too but loved seeing that the ferro rods and striker all worked decently well.

I know you were talking about how you don't have to destroy the laces to start a fire, but wouldn't it be cool if they made it out of the same fibers as those orange stringy things that are floating around?

I drill a hole through a ferro rod and the thread a shoe lace through it and it stores under the side flap of the gusset. This is easier though.

Nice to see something new, thanks for the review Brian! I'm not sure why they wouldn't have used firecord though… perhaps it was too thick for most shoe lace holes. Striker is a little bigger than it needs to be also or make it have some sort of cap so it isn't cutting into the shoe over time, I suppose it would double as a blade. Thanks again for a sharing this new idea with us- CP

For $3.95 I think it's a hell of an idea. I will likely never use them. But as has been said many times, "Two is one and one is none." Never hurts to have one more back up tool if you can fit it in. Great idea. I just ordered mine.

I had some of these, but they didn't fit my boot holes, so I gave them to someone else. I didn't get a chance to try them out before I gave them away, though. I think it's really neat, though! I do wonder how long the ferro rods are going to last on the ends because how small/thin they are, but they'll at least get a few fires going! Thanks for the review!
